Corporate History
44 years of Excellence in Entertainment & Leisure
The Eden Leisure Group has become known for setting the standards for the leisure industry in Malta, building an illustrious portfolio within the hospitality and entertainment sectors over the past 44 years. The Eden Leisure Group started out as Sunny Resorts, set up by Dr Maurice De Cesare and his wife Cettina in 1966. The Eden Rock Hotel, located on the Sliema seafront, opened its doors in 1967 and flourished in the tourism boom of the early 70s.
In the late 1970's Ian and Kevin De Cesare moved the company to St George's Bay, bringing exciting new ideas with them. The Group began to diversify and extended its portfolio to include entertainment and leisure facilities. Since then, the Eden Leisure Group has become known for setting the standards for the leisure industry in Malta.
1980, saw the opening of the Eden Beach Hotel and Styx Discotheque in St George's Bay. Styx was the first 'electronic' disco of its kind, and fast became the 'in' place of its time. The Eden Leisure Group has been involved in the nightlife sector ever since with Stownes, Styx II, the Palladium, Euphoria and now its involvement in Axis and Numero Uno, constantly setting new standards and meeting the ever-changing demands of the younger generations.
In 1986, the Group set up the Sports Connection, which was re-vamped and enlarged ten years later and opened as Cynergi health and fitness club.
In 1988, The Eden Leisure Group launched The Eden Super Bowl which revitalised the whole concept of bowling as a leisure activity in Malta. The Super Bowl is a fully computerised Tenpin Bowling center offering 20 lanes of bowling and a variety of entertainment: from fun bowling through to National bowling leagues and world ranking International Tournaments that attract top international bowlers. SuperBowl is popular with families and organizes birthday parties and staff parties. DiscoBowling is held once monthly. A big TV Screen shows all important international Sports Events and is therefore popular with Bowlers who do not wish to miss on viewing their favorite Sports Programs on TV.
In 1991, Bay Radio, one of the first private radio stations in Malta, was introduced, broadcasting 24 hours a day in Maltese and English. Bay Radio, also known as 89.7 Bay, offers the latest selection of music and celebrity DJ's. It has been consistently voted firm favorite amongst young adult listeners. The Bay Music Awards, organised yearly in December by 89.7 Bay, has become a much-awaited event in the Maltese Music Calendar.
In 1993, the opening of Eden Cinemas heralded the re-birth of cinema going, bringing quality Cinema entertainment to Malta. The Eden Cinemas' Megaplex now comprises 17 screens at St George's Bay, St. Julians. This is the first time that cinemas in Malta offer customers stadium seating, air conditioning, Dolby digital sound and seriously large screens.
In 1998, Cinema 16 was built and is one of the largest screens in Europe. It is the only cinema in Malta with THX certified sound system, resulting in perfect audio playback. It is further enhanced by Dolby Digital-Surround EX, which provides a surround sound channel that comes from the rear of the cinema, encircles the audience with sound, making the cinema experience even more realistic.
The New Millennium began with the Group`s quest to improve leisure facilities. Cynergi was pulled down in 1999 to reopen in September 2001 as the new Cynergi health and fitness Centre. Cynergi is, to date, the largest gym in Malta covering an area of about 2000m2. Cynergi has a large variety of cardio vascular machines, professional weight machines, indoor pool, sauna, steam bath, virtual climbing wall, 2 squash courts and a large studio for aerobics classes.
The opening of the new Cynergi Health and fitness Centre eventually linked with a 5 Star Deluxe hotel, The InterContinental Malta. This amazing 5 star hotel opened on 18th January 2003. It consists of 451 Rooms and has also many facilities consisting of 6 Restaurants, 3 Bars, 2 fresh water pools (1 outdoor & 1 heated indoor pool), 3 Saunas & 1 Turkish steam bath, Club InterContinental Lounge, 24 Hour Room Service and a 24 Hour Business Centre (manned office hours).
The InterContinental Malta also introduced a Beauty Salon offering the latest beauty and slimming treatments. The Beauty Studio offers the best beauty and relaxing treatments using oils and herbs that guarantee a truly essential experience in a relaxed atmosphere. The Largest indoor area, The Bay Arena was completed in late 2003 following the closure of the Ice Arena. This multi-purpose Arena offers the largest uninterrupted floor area as well as a significant amount of non-core space, in the popular St. Julians area and has a capacity of comfortably accommodating up to 4500 patrons, making it an ideal venue for trade shows, conferences, big parties, concerts or launches.
